Deadline Dread

My take on a browser-based bullet hell game, starring an overworked web developer fighting off scope creep and buggy assets instead of monsters. It's partly an excuse to actually learn how game loops work, and partly a fun side project I keep coming back to with friends.

Deadline Dread

What it is

Deadline Dread is a survivor-like bullet hell game where you play as a web developer, dodging and battling humorous, nightmarish versions of everyday work headaches — scope creep, buggy assets, that one client email at 5pm on a Friday. The goal is a fun, fully playable browser game for me and my friends to actually enjoy, and maybe a solid prototype for an Android version down the line.

Why I'm building it

Mostly to understand how game loops actually work under the hood — spawning, collision, timing, all the stuff that's easy to hand-wave past when you've only played games and never built one. It's turned into a collaborative learning exercise with friends, poking at game design and mechanics one iteration at a time.

Where it's at

Early days — the core loop, spawning, and basic combat are in, but there's a long way to go before it's the game in my head. The playable prototype is up at dev.scootr.ca/deadlinedread if you want to poke at it, rough edges and all.
