Accessibility

Last updated: August 3, 2026

scootr.ca is built and maintained by one person — a developer who cares about making this site usable for as many people as possible. This page explains what's been done, what's still a work in progress, and how to reach out if something isn't working for you.

Our Commitment

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. That's not a legal requirement for a personal site like this one, but it's the right target — the web should work for everyone, regardless of ability or how they access it.

What We've Done

  • Automated accessibility testing (via axe-core) across every page before launch, covering colour contrast, alt text, link naming, ARIA usage, and heading structure
  • A keyboard-navigable interface, including a skip-to-content link and visible focus states
  • Respect for prefers-reduced-motion — animations, including the rotating 3D logo, are disabled for visitors who've indicated that preference at the OS or browser level
  • Semantic HTML and appropriate ARIA labelling throughout
  • Colour contrast checked against WCAG AA thresholds across the site's dark theme

Known Limitations

This is a personal site maintained without a dedicated QA or accessibility team, so there are real gaps:

  • Automated testing was run using headless Chromium — there hasn't yet been a full manual pass with a screen reader (e.g. NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver)
  • Cross-browser accessibility (Safari, Firefox) hasn't been independently verified
  • Some third-party embedded content (Spotify players, GitHub/Last.fm/Steam activity widgets) is outside our direct control and may not fully meet the same standard

These are being worked through incrementally rather than claiming full compliance that hasn't been verified.

Reporting an Issue

If you run into anything on this site that's difficult to use — a page that doesn't work with your screen reader, text that's hard to read, a control you can't reach by keyboard, or anything else — I want to know. Reach out any time: jeremy@scootr.ca

I'll do my best to respond promptly and fix confirmed issues.
